Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1963, Derek Galloway began his musical journey studying under Sheila Laing and Stewart Forbes during his school years. He continued his education at Napier University in Edinburgh with Sheila Cochrane and later refined his skills with Sheena Gordon of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Derek has had the privilege of participating in masterclasses with renowned flutists, including Wissam Boustany, David Nicolson, Lorna McGhee, Paul Edmond-Davis, Peter Lloyd, Ian Clarke, and Sir James Galway.

​

As a professional musician, Derek played extensively and was a founding member of Zonda Flutes, an award-winning flute trio based in Glasgow. He also performed with the Glasgow Wind Band, one of Europe’s premier symphonic wind orchestras, before relocating to Australia in 2008.

​

Since moving to Sydney, Derek has established himself as a sought-after music educator and flute tutor. He teaches in schools across Sydney, operates a private teaching studio in Lane Cove, and works with the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. His expertise is frequently called upon as a guest conductor and ensemble coach for various music groups.

​

In 2010, Derek launched Flute Connections, an organization dedicated to hosting professional flute workshops and events across New South Wales. He is also the owner and director of Syrinx Music, a specialist flute and woodwind sheet music company based on the Central Coast

​

Derek holds an Associate of Trinity College London (ATCL) and a Diploma in Music from the Open University. A certified BodyMinded practitioner, he combines his extensive training with a holistic approach to teaching.

 

Derek is an active member of the flute community, serving as the NSW representative of the British Flute Society and as a committee member of The Flute Society of NSW.

In addition to his achievements in music education and performance, Derek appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby.
